The Health Inequalities Unit in the Department of Health supports local action to tackle health inequalities in England and has a national and international focus. The work of the team is shaped by the Departmental Strategic Objective / national target to reduce inequalities in health outcomes by 10 percent by 2010, as measured by infant mortality and life expectancy at birth.
World class commissioning is a programme of work to strengthen commissioning in the NHS and social care, and is a key enabler to deliver improved health and well-being outcomes and to reduce health inequalities.
Gary Belfield leads the work as Director of Commissioning in the Department of Health.
